Along with all the fun Babesia, Bartonella, Borrelia and Ehrlichia have with our bodies, they rock when it comes to messing with the brain. Autism? Might be Borrelia or another parasite. Schizophrenia? Might be Bartonella or another parasite. Psychosis? Ditto, along with undiagnosed or improperly treated hypothyroidism, or side effects of drugs prescribed for TBI. Depression? The parasites can cause depression, or make much worse an existing depressive disorder. Same goes for the drugs prescribed to treat TBI. Undiagnosed or improperly treated hypothyroidism can also cause severe depression. Suicidal ideation? Parasites and side effects to some of the drugs used to treatment can drive people to the verge of suicide, as can undiagnosed or improperly treated hypothyroidism. Successful suicides due to the pain and depression of the disease, topped by the rejection of the medical community and families? These tragedies occur all too often, thanks to the continued lack of knowledge on the part of physicians and mental health professionals and families. (Why am I bringing up hypothyroidism here? Because these tickborne diseases affect the endocrine system's function, they affect the thyroid gland's function, which is why the majority of TBI patients have hypothyroidism, with a few thrown the other way, into hyperthyroidism. These thyroid disorders requires a physician who is knowledgeable enough about the thyroid tests and clinical diagnosis of thyroid disorders to be able to tweak the medications frequently as the courses of treatment for the TBI continue for the months (usually years) until the patient is stabilized at a higher level of functioning.)
