Canadian, Mexican and Off-Shore Pharmacy Resources

Compiled by Melissa Kaplan

It is a sad fact of life that, even when you can find a physician to treat your particular CND disease or disorder, you are then left scrounging around to find enough money to get your prescriptions filled. If you are like me, there simply isn't enough money for the prescriptions, prescribed intravenous treatment, and supplements, herbs, etc., for my gut, mercury toxicity, pain, cognitive function, hormones, and everything else that my doctor can write a script for or recommend. So, along with everything else we must cope with we have to deal with being chronically under-treated and under-medicated, a plight shared with all elderly and disabled people surviving on social security.

With that in mind, here are some resources I've come across. Depending on where you live and where the company is and what the situation is, there may be some legal issues you will need to deal with. By providing this information, I am by no means advocating the breaking of any laws.

Important Notes:
Many of the foreign pharmacy sites require you buy a book to get the information, or pay an annual or monthly membership fee to have access to the information at their site site visitors are most interested in.

Not all drugs may be the same as the drugs dispensed here in the U.S. Aside from the differences in brand and generic names that vary from country to country, there may be less quality control over generics or illicit 'copycat' drugs produced elsewhere.

Some sites seem to specialize in certain types or classes of drugs, such as controlled pain and antipsychotic medications, diet medications, Viagra, anabolic steroids. If you are looking for sources for more mundane substances, you may have to wade through several sites before finding sources carrying what you need.

Not all foreign pharmacies are equally reputable. This is definitely a case of caveat emptor. Other than as indicated by an asterisk (*), I have not purchased any of these guides nor used any of the sites to purchase medications so please do not write me to ask for personal recommendations.

There is are some websites that you can join to get information on online drug sellers, in the U.S. and elsewhere. Many of these sites require a membership fee in order to access the information you are looking for. DrugBuyers.com does provide that information for free, asking that you post your own experience in their forums and add information to their database.

You can (and should) check out U.S. Internet pharmacies as well as those outsdie the U.S. Some are bogus, making their own drugs (as this CBS news story in September 2006 details). The National Association of Boards of Pharmacies has US and non-US pharmacy boards and contact information.

While you are doing price comparisons for the drugs you need, don't forget to check with your local Costco pharmacy. They do not accept insurance plans, but do charge uniformly lower prices than even many of the local discount pharmacies, and these prices are available to people who are not Costco members. Just walk in, tell the people checking member cards at the door that you are going to the pharmacy, and in you go. You have to pay for your Costco prescriptions by check or cash; they do not accept credit cards, so be prepared. You can call the pharmacy and tell them the drug, strength, and dose you take, and they will give you a price over the phone. Don't bothere using the Costco website for price checking, as the prices there are, for some reason I have yet to fathom, higher than you will actually pay at the store.

A Reminder...
Please remember that drugs are drugs: they have effects and side effects. Many drugs are contraindicated when you are taking certain other drugs, have certain medical conditions, or when taken in conjunction with other drugs, with or without food or certain foods, and when combined with alcohol, marijuana or other recreational or therapeutic substances. A good patient-doctor relationship includes discussing new drugs and their anticipated side effects and contraindications. A good local pharmacy will print out pages of information for each new prescription you get and, if you get all your scripts filled at the same local pharmacy, they can, when you request, advise you when there are contraindications between drugs prescribed by different physicians. You will get none of this support buying drugs on your own from foreign pharmacies, even those that have a physician on-call to write scripts for those drugs requiring them. Foreign pharmacies can be a way to get necessary medications you cannot afford to get at home, but they should not replace sound medical care and discussion with your doctor.
